Dancer + Doumbek
Amira and Rich Miller -- her husband and drummer -- made their debut as "Samar" on Nov. 14, 2009, at the South East Belly Dance Queen Showcase and Competition.
The Arabic word "Samar" means "conversations into the night" and implies the softly spoken words between lovers. "Pillow talk" if you will.
"It's a beautiful name and captured perfectly who we are together," Amira said. "The first time I got an inkling that we were really meant for each other was our fourth date, when we literally talked into the night and the next morning until 5 a.m. in my living room."
The two met online in November 2005 and met in person the following month. By August they were engaged and were married on April 28, 2007.
In the fall of 2008, Rich decided to join Mark Freeman and his doumbek class. Out of those classes has emerged the percussion group Out of the Darj, which already is making its mark on the local dance and music scene. Partnering with his dancer wife was a natural, and the two are looking forward to more performances together!
